One of the most important goals in modern automotive design is decreasing the amount of carbon dioxide emitted per kilometer.   One approach is switching to electric and hybrid engines while the other is lowering the overall weight of the vehicle so that less energy is used during operation.  Another important goal is increasing passenger and pedestrian safety.  Last but not the least, automotive producers are aiming to produce vehicles that are 100% recyclable when scrapped.
